Greentech Auto: Mercedes relies on various battery systems

A portfolio of different cell chemistries will be coming in the next few months – Mercedes is also working on solid-state batteries: The Stuttgart car manufacturer Mercedes will offer battery systems with different performance levels in its model series in the future. There will be “a range spread for battery-electric vehicles” depending on the battery type, explains Mercedes development director Markus Schäfer in an interview with the magazine auto motor und sport.

“We will have different battery chemistries in our program. We will offer LFP (lithium iron phosphate battery, editor’s note) at the MMA for the rather short ranges, for the high-end vehicles there will be plenty of silicon oxide on the anode side.

This will be realized soon. “We will see a broad portfolio of different cell chemistries in the next few months.”

Mercedes is also working on solid-state batteries. “For solid-state batteries, we are working with several start-ups to build the first prototypes,” says Schäfer.

“Sodium will not play a role for Mercedes vehicles in the foreseeable future because the energy content is so low that the ranges that can be achieved with it are not adequate for Mercedes, but possibly for entry-level vehicle classes.”
